2003 昌泰千家寨・金竹山野生圓茶 | Round Pressed Tea | 2003 Vintage

Product Description

A distinctive expression of Yunnan's early 2000s Pu’er tea heritage, the 2003 Changtai Qianjiazhai Jinzhu Mountain Wild-Grown Raw Pu’er reflects a period when traditional tea craftsmanship and the growing appreciation for wild-grown and mountain-sourced tea materials helped shape a new generation of Chinese pressed teas.

Produced under the Changtai (昌泰) name, this vintage pressing bears the historical Qianjiazhai (千家寨) designation and the original Jinzhu Mountain Wild Tea (金竹山野生圓茶) title. Its distinctive packaging reflects the regional identities and wild-grown tea traditions associated with Yunnan's evolving Pu’er industry.

With over two decades of ageing, this raw Pu’er offers an opportunity to explore the natural transformation of traditionally pressed tea. As youthful bitterness and astringency gradually soften, deeper woody aromas, mellow sweetness, and a more rounded, layered character can emerge.

Preserved within our family's tea collection, with historical records linking its distribution to Hong Kong tea merchant Yongshengxiang (永生祥), this vintage pressing represents a connection between Yunnan's wild-grown tea heritage and Hong Kong's longstanding tea-trading traditions.

Origin

Jinzhu Mountain, Jinggu County, Pu’er, Yunnan Province, China

Jinzhu Mountain (金竹山) is historically associated with the Kuzhu Mountain (苦竹山) tea-growing area near Xiao Jinggu in southwestern Yunnan. Characterized by mountainous terrain, established tea-growing traditions, and diverse natural vegetation, the region has long been associated with Yunnan large-leaf tea cultivation.

The historical designation Wild-Grown reflects the traditional 野生 terminology used in the original product name. During the early 2000s, such terminology was commonly used in the Pu’er trade to describe teas associated with naturally growing or less intensively managed mountain tea trees, although cultivation methods and botanical classifications varied.

Changtai Tea Industry (昌泰茶業) was among the emerging Yunnan tea producers that developed regionally identified Pu’er teas during this period. This pressing carries the Qianjiazhai (千家寨) designation alongside the Jinzhu Mountain name, reflecting the geographical and commercial identities associated with the region's tea trade.

The Qianjiazhai designation associated with Jinggu should not be confused with the better-known Qianjiazhai ancient tea-tree area in Zhenyuan County.
